Assistant Herdsperson

Large Dairy Farm | Cashel, Co. Tipperary

Grasstec are recruiting on behalf of our client for an Assistant Herdsperson to join the team on a large, progressive dairy farm near Cashel, Co. Tipperary.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and motivated dairy farmer to join an established team and play an important role in the day-to-day management of a large, high-performing dairy herd.

Working closely with the Herd Manager, the successful candidate will be involved in all aspects of the daily running of the farm, with responsibility increasing when the Herd Manager is away.

The successful candidate will be joining a well-established operation where teamwork, attention to detail and high standards are important.

Key Responsibilities

The Assistant Herdsperson will work closely with the Herd Manager and farm team across all aspects of the dairy enterprise.

Typical duties will include:

• Assisting with the day-to-day management of the dairy herd
• Milking and ensuring high standards of milking routine and hygiene
• Monitoring herd health and identifying cows requiring attention
• Assisting with herd breeding and reproductive programmes
• Monitoring body condition, animal performance and general herd wellbeing
• Feeding cows and youngstock as required
• Grassland management, including grazing management and grass allocation
• Assisting with silage and winter feed management
• Maintaining accurate herd and farm records
• Maintaining high standards of animal welfare
• Working as part of the wider farm team to ensure the smooth running of the enterprise
• Carrying out other duties associated with the efficient running of a large dairy farm

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will ideally have:

• Previous experience working on a dairy farm
• Good practical knowledge of dairy herd management
• Experience with milking and herd health
• A strong understanding of grassland and grazing management
• Good animal handling skills
• The ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Good communication and organisational skills
• A strong work ethic and positive attitude
• Good attention to detail
• The ability to take responsibility and make decisions when required

Previous experience in a large-scale dairy operation would be an advantage. However, candidates with the right attitude, practical ability and ambition to progress will also be considered.
